One of the keys to being more sustainable is consuming less.
Easier said than done since most marketing out there is aimed at getting us to buy more stuff. It’s hard to ignore, but we can set ourselves up for success by building it into our lifestyle.
Consumption of clothing has skyrocketed in the last several decades with the advent of fast fashion - cheaper, lower quality clothing that’s being churned out at staggering rates. New designs are sent to stores as frequently as once a week! One fast fashion company produced 1.5 billion pieces of clothing in 2018 alone. Do we really need that much clothing?
A great way to cut down on purchasing new clothing is to create a capsule wardrobe.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
It’s defined as a collection of essential, timeless clothing pieces you love that can be easily paired together to create a variety of looks for all occasions. But if you love bold colors and prints, don’t let that turn you off from creating a capsule wardrobe, use your sense of style to build it.
At its heart, a capsule wardrobe is about building a thoughtfully curated collection of clothing you love, that can be used to create a multitude of outfits, while cutting down on the constant consumption of new clothing.
Every person's capsule wardrobe will be different because everyone has their own style that will come through.
How to build a capsule wardrobe?
You don’t have to toss everything in your closet and start from scratch (that wouldn’t be very sustainable, would it?).
One way to start is to turn all the hangers in your closet backwards, anything that isn’t turned around in 6 months can be donated, this will help you pair down the items you have.
You can also try challenges like Project 333, choose 33 items from your closest to wear for 3 months, or the 10x10 challenge, choose 10 items to wear for 10 days. Both are great ways to start a minimalist lifestyle without starting from zero.
Or look for a local stylist focused on sustainability and capsule wardrobes to help you get started.
Benefits of a capsule wardrobe?
End decision fatigue and save time! With a capsule wardrobe your closet isn’t crammed full of items that don’t coordinate or you don’t wear, and it’s not so stuffed you don’t even know what you have. You’ll be able to easily choose outfits that look great in no time!
Save money too! You won’t be binge-shopping every season, you’ll know what you have and only get what you need. No more impulse buying or sales taking your hard earned cash.
It’s more sustainable! Consuming less is the easiest and cheapest way to be more sustainable.
But don’t take our word for it. Our friend Dana Magnus has a capsule wardrobe and is loving it. “I’ve learned the benefits of a capsule wardrobe that continue to unfold in my everyday life. Less closet clutter, more decisive outfit planning, and being able to fall in love with the pieces that I have hand chosen to work with me, my style, and my ethics, so efficiently. If you want to simplify your morning routine (everyone wants to buy back more time for themselves, right!?), consider ditching the binge-sale shopping and shop more intentionally and responsibly with a capsule closet!"
